Overview

POSITION TITLE: Family Nurse Practitioner/Women's Health

DEPARTMENT: Family Medicine

REPORTS TO: Chief Medical Officer

POSITIOIN OVERVIEW: The Family Nurse Practitioner may perform his/her duties under the direct supervision of the physician. Supervision means overseeing the activities of, and accepting the responsibility for, the medical services rendered by a Family Nurse Practitioner. (The supervising physician need not be physically present at the time of services but shall be immediately available by telecommunications and within reasonable distance to assume personal care).

Responsibilities

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES:

  1. The physician and Family Nurse Practitioner are expected to understand and comply with all current laws, rules and regulations which govern the practice of Family Nurse Practitioners in the State of California and will be acknowledging this by affixing their signature on the Family Nurse Practitioner practice application.
  2. A Family Nurse Practitioner may gather a database on all new patients or established patients with new or existing problems which may include a complete medical history and physical examination, medical record review, and he/she may order the appropriate initial diagnostic studies and initiate a treatment plan. The Family Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for transmitting that information orally, or through notation in the patient’s medical record, to the supervising physician for review.
  3. A Family Nurse Practitioner may order/select a dangerous drug or controlled substance or order medical treatments or diagnostic studies in any health care setting in accordance with Rule 360-5-.07(8).
  4. The Family Nurse Practitioner, as qualified by training and experience as determined by the supervising physician, may perform medical treatments, diagnostic procedures, or tasks as delegated by the supervising physician which fall within the normal scope of practice of the supervising physician.
  5. A Family Nurse Practitioner may instruct and counsel patients and their families, and involve them in informed decision making, with regards to their illness or injury, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, treatment regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, advanced directives, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance. He/she may also facilitate referrals of patients to other medical providers, medical providers, medical facilities, or other health/social service agencies when appropriate as per the delegation of the supervising physician.
  6. In a life threatening emergency situation, when the supervising physician is not present, the Family Nurse Practitioner may initiate appropriate evaluation and emergency treatment and notify his/her supervising physician treatment.
  7. The Family Nurse Practitioner shall be at all times properly identified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and shall wear a clearly legible identification name tag with the words “Family Nurse Practitioner” as required under Rule 360-5-.07(6).
  8. A Family Nurse Practitioner may carry out a prescription drug or device order in any health care setting in accordance with Rule 360-5-.12.
  9. Other duties may be delegated by the physician depending upon experience and training as hospital or clinic privileges allow.
  10. All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must have completed a Family Nurse Practitioner training program approved by the National Commission of Certification of Family Nurse Practitioners (NCCFNP).
  2. Must have a current valid license as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the Medical Board of California and Physician Assistant Examining Committee.
  3. Must have possession of/or eligible to apply for furnishing number.
  4. Previous clinical experience in adult and pediatric assessment and treatment preferred.
  5. Must possess a willingness to work with a broad spectrum of patients and community programs.
  6. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills; and the ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team oriented environment.
  7. Ability to speak Spanish Preferred.
  8. Commitment to the provision of high quality health care.
  9. Willingness to adapt to changes in clinic schedules, agency growth and expansion.
