REPORTS TO:               Chief Executive Officer                  

 

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Dental Director shall be responsible for the direction of all aspects related to all FHCCGLA Dental services.  Responsibilities shall include quality, safety and service of care provided and actively involved in performance improvement initiatives to improve care, treatment and services and mitigate the risk of harm for all patients served.  The Dental Director will provide input to cost containment initiatives and assure the patients interests drive performance improvement.  The Dental Director will provide leadership for regulatory and accreditation compliance related to the quality and safety of care delivered.

 

Under general supervision of the C.E.O. and in collaboration with the Executive Leadership, the Dental Director is responsible for administering, maintaining, expanding, and clinically practicing in a program of primary preventive dental care in accordance with FHCCGLA’s goals and ensuring compliance with all stakeholders as necessary. The Dental Director supervises all dental staff and represents, provides counsel to FHCCGLA’s leadership to ensure the growth of the Dental department (e.g., Strategic goals, staff recruitment & retention, etc.). Also performs clinical and direct care responsibilities.

Responsibilities

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Shall report directly FHCCGLA’s C.E.O. and work with FHCCGLA’s Executive Leadership Team.
  2. Creates, annually reviews, updates & implements FHCCGLA’s Dental Policies & Procedures to ensure compliance with all payors/programs & stakeholders.
  3. Provides oversight of all Dental Department staff to include the D.D.S., Dental Manager, R.D.A.’s, D.A.’s, Dental Receptionist & Dental Hygienist (if applicable) by ensuring to be available, approachable & mentor staff as needed.
  4. Oversight of FHCCGLA’s Dental department budget & overall evaluation.
  5. Assures all annual risk management trainings are being conducted and documented (e.g., Agenda, Sign-in sheet, handouts, PowerPoints, etc.)- Copy is to be forwarded to Administration for record keeping.
  6. Works with the Human Resources (H.R.) Department to:
  • Assist with onboarding of all new Dental providers.
  • Ensure timely Dental credentialing & privileging.
  • All Applications are submitted timely for all new hire D.D.S.’s:

  1. Assures high quality dental care treatment is provided to all FHCCGLA patients to meet patient satisfaction standards following FHCCGLA’s mission (e.g., quality, affordable & accessible).
  2. Ensures HIPAA compliance by maintaining strict confidentiality of all patient data and E.H.R./Practice Management System (PMS) according to regulations and FHCCGLA’s P&P’s.
  3. Remains informed of:
  • Current legal and regulatory changes related to scope of practice.
  • Specific programs/payors, insurances accepted, and services offered at FHCCGLA.
  1. Implement the rules of the dental staff governing the quality and scope of care provided.
  2. Assists in maintaining & establishing new referral collaboratives to ensure that FHCCGLA’s patients receive the necessary specialist dental care.
  3. Assist in the development of an applicable continuous quality improvement program which includes monitoring and evaluation of dental care activities and patient services with a timeline to assess the efficiency of corrective measures.
  4. Reviews current dental services provided (e.g., Exams & x-rays, Cleanings, Fluoride treatments, Tooth removal, Fillings & crowns, Root canal treatments, Scaling & root planning, etc.) and recommends/implements new services as applicable.
  5. Analyzes audit results with a goal to address/improve dental record review (DRR) findings and show improvement the following audit year to meet patient care and quality standards.
  6. Analyzes dental care provided to establish key program indicators (e.g., fluoride treatments performed, # of sealants, timely dental treatment plans, completed cases, etc.).
  7. Ensures all encounters are coded accurately (no upcoding or misuse), authorizations are obtained as needed and closed timely to allow accurate documentation of services and prompt billing/reimbursement.
  8. Conducts 90-day/Annual Performance Appraisals (A.P.A.’s) of all Dental department staff timely. Works with the Dental Manager to ensure they are completed in a timely manner as the A.P.A’s are tied to an annual pay raise.
  9. Responsible for ensuring the dental department meets all applicable Federal, State & local regulations to include but not limited to OSHA & A.D.A. compliance/requirements.
  10. Works with FHCCGLA’s C.M.O. and Q.I./Q.A.- Risk Management Coordinator to:
  • Develop & implement a dental peer review process.
  • Identify pertinent PDSA’s.
  •  
  1. Conducts random quarterly dental chart audits and incorporates data-driven strategic solutions to address any findings to improve clinical effectiveness.
  2. Works jointly with the dental site- operations managers in regards to:
  • Dental provider schedules
  • Time Off (T.O.) Requests management (to ensure adequate clinic coverage)
  • Patient flow (bottlenecks), scheduling issues, etc.
  • Adherence to work shift scheduled (tardiness issues)
  •  
  1. Facilitate discussions related to ethical patient dental care issues, assisting to achieve satisfactory resolution to the issue(s) or grievance(s).
  2. Provides dental education, training & mentoring to provide continuous learning opportunities.
  3. Addresses issues or grievances timely adhering to FHCCGLA’s Grievance P&P’s
  4. Motivation to take initiative to ensure all tasks performed are completed thoroughly and accurately.
  5. Positively motivates D.D.S. providers and dental support staff by establishing a positive climate and work environment by:

Qualifications

 

MININUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Doctor of Dental Surgery (General Dentistry).
  2. Current Dental license.
  3. FQHC experience, highly preferred.
  4. DEA
  5. Board certified in the practice specialty.
  6. Knowledge of Dental programs (e.g., My Health LA, Denti-Cal, Access Dental, HMO & PPO, etc.).
  7. Dental billing & coding knowledge.
  8. Program development experience preferred.
  9. Must meet required C.E.’s annually.
  10. Current CPR certification, required.
  11. Member of the A.D.A. in good standing.
  12. Education, experience related to the specialty of care.
  13. Highly skilled in written and verbal communication.
  14. Experience and knowledge of multi-ethnic and community-based clinic environments.
  15. Experience working with information technology (IT) staff to implement and manage sophisticated management of the E.H.R. software.
  16. Ability to perform clinical dental responsibilities within FHCCGLA’s P&P guidelines.
